Senior Portrait Article Notes

  • Monarch Photography has become known for effects, such as, gradient masks.
  • Photographers who go out of their way to find out their subjects' interests are the most successful at putting them at ease and getting the most evocative images.
  • Incorporate elements that make the images very personal, make the student look good, and create a fun experience.
  • Listen to the teens suggestions
  • Music videos, movies, TV, fashion, advertising and magazine editorials all contribute to what seniors want for their portraits.
  • Guys want to look like rock stars or pro athletes.
  • Girls tend to be fashion oriented and want to look beautiful.
  • To please the parents and grandparents as well, photographers take traditional studio shots.
  • Photographer asks seniors to bring one set of clothing that won't look dated in 20 years to get a classic portrait for the family.
  • Gritty urban settings are popular because you can contrast what the client is wearing and the location.

Elaine Gates Recap

Some things that I learned from Elaine Gates that would benefit me in doing this project are the different lighting techniques. For example, if it's a sunny day you want to try and hide the sun behind the person so they're not whited out by the light. Another thing I learned that could be beneficial to me is how to pose somebody.

HDR Final Shots

Framing
ISO: 100, Aperture: f/22, Shutter Speed: (1/8), (1/30), (1/2). I selected this subject because I liked how the picnic table was framed by the leaves around it.

Different Perspective
ISO: 100, Aperture: f/22, Shutter Speed: (1/60), (1/250), (1/15). I chose this subject because I like chicken and I thought it would look cool in HDR.

Repetition
ISO: 100, Aperture: f/22, Shutter Speed: (1/20), (1/80), (1/5). I selected this subject because most of central PA is made up of farmland.

Leading Lines
ISO: 100, Aperture: f/22, Shutter Speed: (1/30), (1/125), (1/8). I chose to photograph the road to emphasize leading lines because it's a road that I drive on everyday on my way to school.

Asymmetrical Balance
ISO: 100, Aperture: f/22, Shutter Speed: (1/40), (1/160), (1/10). I chose to photograph these Silo Towers because I liked how the one has vines going up its side. I also thought that it would look cool in HDR.

Symmetrical Balance
ISO: 100, Aperture: f/22, Shutter Speed: (1/13), (1/50), (1/3). I chose to photograph this Willow Tree because I liked how it hangs over the objects on either side.

I like how with HDR you can make a photograph look so unrealistic and surreal. However if you don't want your photograph to look too unrealistic you can still make it look natural. Most of my photographs don't really tell a story, they are just a collection of photographs of objects I see everyday. It gets me thinking about the endless possibilities of photos that I could take, whether it be photos that tell a story or just photos that I take for fun. When editing these photos, I liked how the lighting helped emphasize and outline the subjects. I also liked how the clouds in some of my picture look really defined and unrealistic.
